Trash-To-Fashion Ball Brings Eco-Friendly Flair To Bregamos

“When you pick up something, think about what else it could be,” artist Rebekah Fraser advised an audience of eager workshop attendees ready to transform textile scraps and trash into fashion. At a table in front of her, Hamden resident Lola Fain sat with her late mother’s embroidered tablecloth, ready to breathe new life into a beloved family heirloom.

Trash to Fashion Challenges Fast Fashion Mentality Amid Record High Textile Waste Numbers

Trash to Fashion and the organization’s founder Rebekah Fraser ’03 are fighting against the fast fashion mentality that has led the world to produce 92 million tons of textile waste every year. Rebekah is a Yale alumna, having earned her BA in Film Studies and Screenwriting, then a writing MFA from Seton Hill University. Since 2007, Fraser has been interested in upcycled clothing and, with Dwight Hall’s Emerging Project support, Trash to Fashion has opened, and it is changing the way people view their clothes.

On the Tuesday morning Rebekah Fraser opens the door to 63 Audubon St., the temperature is already in the high 80s, and only climbing. Outside, the air is still and heavy, the kind of humid that sticks to one’s skin like shrinkwrap. Inside, the mannequins are quiet, as if they have been sleeping.
When the lights come on, their clothes come alive: a vest fashioned from an old target bag makes conversation with a dress that was once a shiny plastic tablecloth.
